20世紀80年代是音樂劇（musical theatre）開始全球發燒的狂熱期，當時才初接觸聲樂的我也跟著合唱團的朋友們一塊迷上那些著名的劇碼，譬如：艾薇塔（Evita）、貓（Cats）、歌劇魅影（The Phantom of the Opera）、悲慘世界（Les Miserables）、西貢小姐（Miss Saigon）等等。比起古典歌劇，音樂劇確實是更平易近人些，畢竟不論是其樂曲曲風或故事情節都更加貼近於當代人的時代品味，所以比較容易引人產生共鳴。當然，我那時（其實現在也還是）對西方音樂懵懵懂懂，故雖說是「迷」，實際上卻是迷得不知其所以然，自然也就不會知道這些「通俗的」音樂劇不過就是現代版的歌劇罷了！
我最近一次迷上的音樂劇是「變身怪醫」（Jekyll and Hyde），不過那也是好久以前的事了。雖說我初來德國時，還特別帶了一片其最早期的音樂會版CD過來，不過迄今五年也不曾拿出來聽過幾遍，甚至都忘了它的存在。若不是前一陣子醱病在家，想隨便找部舊影片出來消遣一下，才又意外地讓它得以重新「出土」。「變身怪醫」這部音樂劇之所以吸引人，除了音樂旋律優美之外，主要也是因為其故事內容張力十足。它是改編自Robert Louis Stevenson 的著名小說Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde ，講一個天真的科學家以為能透過藥物輕鬆將人的邪惡面給徹底剷除，卻反而造出了一個醜陋邪惡的化身，而其結局當然是悲劇收場。畢竟人性之惡豈是能夠如此就輕易解決的？人性之奧秘恰恰就在於：當人越想勉強用外力去根除心中之惡時，其邪惡面的反噬力就會相應加劇。不過話說回來，人性中的善良面也是同樣難以被輕易消滅的。否則的話，人們怎麼會常常在善惡一線間掙扎不已呢？這麼一個人生亙古的課題，就簡單體現在這個故事裡。
每次當我聽這齣音樂劇的曲子，都會感到一絲淡淡的優美與哀愁。只可惜我迄今都還沒有機會親眼看現場演出，體驗一下其整體的藝術表現。拜網路之賜，我尚能在上頭找到一些影像檔片段，過過乾癮。但是啊！有時不看還比看了好，因為我所找到的大多是李麥克（David Hasselhoff）主演的版本，一看到他在舞台表演上的模樣，之前心縈的那種哀愁氛圍瞬間即蕩然無存，腦海中會不自主湧現出黑色霹靂車跟橘色游泳衣的影像，就差烏鴉從頭上飛過的畫面可堪與之比擬，Orz ...
